Frequently Asked Questions

Fondant or Buttercream?

Fondant is a sugar based sheet that covers the base layer of buttercream on my cakes. It produces a more professional finished look. Fondant also acts as a moisture barrier and can prevent cakes from drying out in the hot summer sun if a cake is going to be out of the refrigerator for a long period of time. There is an extra cost associated with fondant and some people do not like the taste of it, but others love it. It can be pealed off after slicing if a guest prefers not to eat it. Buttercream is more versatile and can create the rustic look that is popular right now or it can be layered on smoothly. Both fondant and buttercream can be colored and extra details can be added to both.

Cake or cupcakes?

A large tiered wedding cake is the more traditional route for a wedding treat, however cupcakes are gaining popularity. Tiered cakes are great for photo ops and that overall “wow” look to compliment a reception area. Tiered cakes would need to be disassembled and sliced before serving, which could add an extra cost to an event. Cupcakes are easy to serve and do not require additional attention before offering them out to your guests. Many of my wedding parties are choosing a combination of cake and cupcakes. A cake to cut for the photos and cupcakes to serve their guests.

How do I choose my flavors?

At silverstatebakery.net/menu, scroll to the bottom and you will see a list of the most popular flavors. You can order a tasting box of 3 cake flavors and 3 icing flavors for $30 or 4 cake flavors and 4 icing flavors for $40. These tasting boxes are available for pick up or meet up with the baker to discuss wedding cake designs.

How much is this all going to cost?

Every order is a custom order, but here are a few estimates to get you thinking. The larger the cake, the less per person the price of each slice. For example, a 6”/8”/10” cake will be about $4.00 a slice. A single 8” or 6” cake as a slicing cake is $5.30-$6.75 a slice. I also recognize the slicing cake is usually a specialty flavor such as carrot cake or red velvet. Cupcakes are around $2.50-$3.00 per cupcake, depending on the flavor and quantity.
